Made by revolving on a lathe while slowly but surely carving away timber until the desired shape is reached. The upper and lower portions are carved whilst rotating about the central cylindrical axis; while the off-centre mid region is turned about an axis that is askew. The intersection of the two creates the distinctive sweeping lines from where the piece takes its name. The top and bottom surfaces are planed flat and true before the whole piece is carefully sanded; removing tool marks from earlier in the process. Finally, finish is applied to bring out the best that the timber has to offer and to protect against the inevitabilities of life.
